Five Ways To Continue Your Education After Graduation

Five Ways To Continue Your Education After Graduation Lifelong learning is often discussed and then discarded as a clique or catchphrase that means little. Successful and interesting people understand that continuing your education after graduation is crucial to keeping your mind toned and agile and your options open. Here are five ways to continue your education after graduation at little or no cost while reaping great benefits. 1. Professional development Take advantage of all opportunities your employer and industry offers to build your skills. Attend seminars, training, and in-house services offered, and be sure to obtain proof of any certifications or credits earned. These courses are usually very targeted to the work you are doing and go beyond the theory you were taught at university to the practical skills you need to grow and prosper in your career. Another way to expand your education is to develop an area of expertise and transition from attendee to presenter. If you become a go-to expert in your field you will make yourself more attractive to your current employer as well as potential employers, should you decide to check out the competition. Should you be interested in pursuing additional degrees at a later time, the niche you carve out for yourself may make your application more appealing. 2. Company-paid courses or degrees Many companies give employees the time and the funding to continue their education. Discuss any current educational plans your company currently has in place, or explore the possibility of creating your own plan that will be partially or fully paid for by your employer. The company you work for may be willing to make a significant educational investment for and with you if it feels it will receive the benefit of your further studies. 3. Community education Your local community colleges often put together short-term courses at little cost. Learn a new language, take up painting or yoga. These opportunities give you the chance to try out some disciplines that weren't previously available or couldn't fit into your schedule. 4. Community organisations Whether it is a book club or a service organisation, joining a group of like-minded individuals outside of the work setting offers you a chance to learn and grow. Some of these affiliations will further your career; others will simply expand your general knowledge, making you a more well-rounded and connected individual. All can give you the chance to develop relationships that can further your career and improve your personal and professional life. 5. Online courses Many colleges and universities offer accredited courses online. Usually they carry a price tag, but it may be less than enrolling as a student in a regular program,e or may be paid for by your employer or industry group. Also investigate the growing educational opportunities made possible through Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs. These online opportunities are offered to individuals worldwide and by institutions of higher education around the globe.

Attention online English teachers What Chinas new crackdown on regulations means for you

Attention online English teachers What China’s new crackdown on regulations means for you Online English teaching forums and Facebook groups are buzzing with the news of regulations being implemented by the Chinese Education Ministry in January 2019. There have been talks of this for a while, but the current buzz was caused by a bunch of the bigger Chinese online teaching companies sending out memos to their current teachers. We’ve pulled together a quick guide to let you know what this means for you. We’ll be keeping it updated as the dust begins to settle and the impact of the changes becomes clearer. Okay first up - what do these memos mean for teachers already on Chinese online teaching platforms? If you haven’t heard from your platform yet, you probably will! If you do, here’s what some of the information on memos from companies like SayABC, VIPKID and DaDa stated: In response to the new regulations announced by the Chinese Ministry of Education, all online English teachers must meet the following requirements by December 31, 2018: Completed a 120-hour (online or in-person) TEFL course from a recognized institution. Uploaded copies of all relevant certification to the platform they teach on: Bachelor’s degree TEFL certification Criminal background check Basically, online platforms want to keep their teachers, so they are hoping their teachers will get the necessary qualifications in time for the big crackdown. It’s unclear how these regulations will be enforced. But the original memo does state that there will be a management platform that schools are answerable to. (Psst: Check out the press release that was featured on the Ministry of Education’s website as well as multiple other sites like the China Daily.) Which brings us to… The original memo - where is this all coming from? The actual memo from the Chinese Education Ministry was scant when it came to useful information for teachers and left things vague. Companies were given the actual regulations by the Ministry of Education ahead of the crackdown and so far most information is coming directly from the memos sent out by online platforms. The announcement means that companies catering to primary and middle school students will have to be accountable for any after-school program (on or offline) and this includes things like: the curriculum, qualifications of teachers, and hours available. For teachers already teaching online this may seem like it’s coming out of the blue. We feel you! But don’t worry - it’s not as bad as it seems. There’s still time to get TEFL certified and make sure you meet the regulations. With requirements changing, you will need the following to teach English online with most Chinese companies: A bachelor’s degree A 120-hour TEFL certificate from an accredited institution 2 years of teaching experience (and nope, a teaching practicum doesn’t cut it here!) Criminal background check So, what are online teachers saying about the crackdown? Here are just a few of the comments and concerns we’ve seen online from working online English teachers: “My school is giving teachers 3 weeks to do a 120-hour course. That seems a little crazy to me.” “I work for a great company in China. They told us the Chinese government is now requiring 120 or more hour TEFL certification from accredited and internationally-known companies. I have 15 years experience, a 40-hour TEFL certificate and a college degree. According to my company, the Chinese government will no longer accept just college degrees of experience, you must have a 120-hour TEFL certificate.” “I was told that there would be changes soon and that my credentials would be viewable for the students with my personal information partially blocked out, but not anything special about my certification. Fortunately, I completed a CELTA early in my career, so it’s not a problem either way.” “I have a master’s degree in TESOL and they still want that certificate. A copy of my degree is not enough.” Can I just get a cheapy TEFL and get this over with? Technically yes, but if you’ve any sense in your head - that will be a hard no! Most reputable TEFL courses will cost you around $1,000, and we don’t advise you to cut corners with this requirement, as it’s a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If you’re in a major hurry to get this sorted, go with an online course, as that’s the fastest option. With the government cracking down, we would recommend that working online teachers who’ve taken cheaper, shorter TEFL certificates in the past think about upgrading to one that will stand up to heavier scrutiny. That’s why we highly recommend that you go with a TEFL that’s been developed by an accredited education institution. For now, you might get away with, say, a Groupon cert, but if we were putting our money on it, we definitely wouldn’t want to take the risk. Here’s our guide on how to know if a TEFL certificate is legit! Note: We will update this article as new information becomes available.

What Are Buffers in Chemistry?

What Are Buffers in Chemistry? What are buffers in Chemistry? These are used by the elements to react with each other in order to separate different kinds of substance. There are several different buffers, such as phosphoric acid, sulfate and ammonium ions, and there are also other kinds of buffers which are neutral buffers, ionic buffers, and chemical buffer kits.Buffer kits are available to purchase from many vendors and often come with free chemical buffers, all you have to do is to follow instructions for use. These kits normally include two chemicals, one neutral and one acidic. Neutral buffers are less than 50 percent Sulfate by volume, neutral buffers give a stronger acidic reaction, and acid buffers are more acidic than neutral. You will need to adjust the strength of your neutral or acid buffers according to the chemical reaction you are conducting.A buffer is important because it helps neutralize the reaction between two chemicals. It is also helpful in creating a reaction t hat is a combination of the two chemicals. The strong, but less acidic, buffer will reduce the reaction of the stronger but more acidic, one.Buffers are used in chemistry to separate and prepare various kinds of substances. For example, it is used in the separation of heavy metals like lead from oil, to make sure the solubility is low, to control the boiling point, to prevent the release of volatile organic compounds, and to determine the properties of solids. Of course, there are other uses that are essential for the maintenance of our civilization.Inorganic buffer materials include buffers with very high pK a and low cationic or anionic groups. The molecular formula for an amine salt is CH2O3, for a trisaccharide is CH4CH2O1. Amines usually have a larger molecular mass than proteins, but the protein groups can be recovered from the salts.Binders are a type of buffer. They are extremely effective at binding. But they also are bound to carbon atoms by hydroxyl or carboxyl groups. Th ere are several types of buffers available. Three of them are amines, bromides, and esters. When you need a buffer in chemistry, the first thing you need to do is to find out the molecular formula of the chemical you are working with. When you have this information, add the appropriate quantity of the chemical to be buffered. So if you want a sodium bicarbonate buffer, make sure that you get sodium carbonate, and not sodium bicarbonate. You should also consider using an ionic buffer or ionic cleaning buffer if you don't want a strong sodium salt.

Why Schools Are Considering Year Round Classes

Why Schools Are Considering Year Round Classes As summer is winding down, ponder the possibility that some schools are considering no summer breaks at all. The idea of year-round schooling, meaning no break is longer than eight weeks, has been tossed around for years, and an article in the District Administration just revisited the debate. Proponents of year-round schooling argue that students dont do anything over the summer. They dont read, they dont look at math problems or history facts. They do nothing and essentially forget all the information they learned the previous year. They argue that the last month or so of school is a waste because students cannot focus on anything but summer, and that the first month is worthless because students have to get back in the learning mindset. Proponents say students lose about two months of math skills achievement over the summer. Its worse for low-income students because they dont have access or the resources for summer learning programs. They lose more than two months in reading achievement. But, middle-class students make slight reading gains, according to the National Summer Learning Association. Others have even tied obesity to summers off, claiming students eat a lot of junk food over the summer, instead of healthier school lunches. Opponents argue that it can increase education costs as more faculty and administrators will be needed. Also, some schools will have to install air conditioning units for summer temperatures. Other schools may even need to build new facilities. In 2006-2007, more than 2 million students were in year-round programs, representing 3,000 schools and 46 states. Since then, the number has remained fairly steady, but the idea is gaining steam again with education reform debate. President Barack Obama has called for longer school years to help American students compete with foreign students and regain some ground. In other countries, some students have 25-30 percent longer school years than American students. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is also a big proponent of year-round and extended schooling. He was the CEO of Chicago Public Schools from 2001-2008 when it adopted year-round schooling. Some believe the Obama/Duncan combination has enough motivation and desire to change the traditional 9-month, summers-off calendar. There are three separate systems for year round education. The single track system is the most popular and accounts for 90 percent of all year-round programs. The single track has shorter breaks scattered periodically throughout the school year instead of one long summer break. But cost is a major issue with this system. Many schools will need air conditioning for this program. However, some argue that the additional costs of running air conditioning are offset by reduced heating costs in the winter when students are on a short vacation. They argue there is no additional cost. It still has the typical 180-day school calendar. The second system is the multitrack, which divides the student body into groups. One group will be on vacation while the other is in school. This can save school districts money by not building more schools while still increasing enrollment. Like the single track, the multitrack still has the 180-day calendar. The third system is the extended year. It adds 15-20 days onto the calendar. Obama and Duncan are heavily endorsing this system, but it is the most costly to implement because schools will have more costs with staying open longer and hiring more staff members.

5 New Years Resolutions for School

5 New Year's Resolutions for School Happy New Year! You may be already kicking off your lifestyle-related resolutions by hitting the gym, cutting back on Facebook, or improving/eliminating any other frequent habits you want to change. Its good to get a solid start on these before you are back in school and overwhelmed with a brand new set of academic responsibilities. You should also spend this time, however, reflecting on one question: can you do better in school this year than you did last year? Although you are still in the midst of the same academic year you left off on in December, the new calendar year is reason enough to spark a change. Look at your previous academic performance and honestly ask yourself what you can do to improve it. This coming semester in the new year is a wide open opportunity for better attitudes and fresh methods to be applied to your studies. How can you make this semester better? Not only should you figure out how to make this semester better, you should figure out how to maintain those changes in the following school semesters. What do you have to do now to make it a real challenge for you next New Years to land on a list of resolutions? If you do it right this time, youll find very few study habits that need to be modified in the future. The number one resolution you should make is to permanently keep the ones you make now. Take into account some of these encouraged resolutions for an improved school year: #1: Use a calendar/planner If youre not already using one, use one. If you do use one, you could probably use it better. Many students own a planner but leave it under a mess of books in their backpack far too often with the occasional scribble in it. A planner is useless when no regular attention is given to it. Once you get into the habit of writing every single homework assignment, exam day, and project due date into this book, youll be amazed at how much less you procrastinate and how much more on the ball you can be in approaching these responsibilities. Take it seriously to the point where youre checking it constantly. With such a dependable source for your schedule and tasks, youll rarely miss a deadline again and wonder how you ever lived without it. Here are some great tips on keeping and using a calendar. #2: Do not miss class for no good reason Especially for college students, skipping class once in awhile can be very tempting and seemingly easy to do, but its just not a good idea. Unless you are legitimately sick or have an actual emergency of some sort, follow the rule of thumb and just go to class. Even if youre under the impression that nothing important will be covered and you can afford to miss it, always err on the side of caution and go. Teachers could always change their lesson plans at the last minute or have a strict attendance policy that could cost you a letter grade. But even more importantly, you should attend class so you can guarantee you get a good handle on the material. Each class is designed for you to get something out of it, and that face-to-face interaction with the teacher is extremely valuable and more helpful than simply attempting to figure out concepts on your own. You may also want to check out these tips on how to participate in a class discussion. #3: Actually do your homework assignments Stop being sluggish and really get those assignments done. When you put some real effort into them, youll understand why the teacher assigned them to you in the first place. Even if it just seems like busy work, put the appropriate amount of thought into the task because its still one step closer to comprehending class material. Youll feel much more accomplished and proud once you actually complete those assignments fully and thoroughly. The point is to work on them as your teacher intended rather than doing just enough to get by. Needless to say, youll see far better results if you do what the teacher asked this is ultimately a big favor to you. #4: Do not solely rely on Spark Notes Going off the point of legitimately completing homework assignments, do yourself an even bigger favor and stop depending on Spark Notes or any other type of cliff notes. These can be good resources for further analysis after reading a book, but they should never be an entire substitute. Although youve probably heard this lecture a hundred times and decided to look past it, a great resolution to make would be to take it seriously. There is no way you can actually grasp the concept and underlying themes of a story without carefully reading it on your own. We all have busy schedules and reading lengthy novels is certainly time-consuming, but putting in the required effort will truly pay off when its time to write a paper or take a quiz. Reading the entire thing and avoiding shortcuts is a great promise to make to yourself. #5: Take a real interest in class material All of these resolutions will be a lot easier to carry through if you actually invest in what you are learning. Treat your classes this year as more than just grades to attain and credits to complete. Each of them has something valuable to offer and you should take advantage of that. Begin each course of the semester with an open mind and genuine interest in what the teacher is laying out for you in the syllabus. New skills and impressive knowledge will come to you quicker when youre really motivated and not trying so hard to convince yourself to listen. Recognize how lucky you are to have this opportunity to sit in so many different classes with so many different teachers. Worst case, you dont enjoy the subject matter but at least have authentically learned something new. You may also want to check out these 6 test prep mantras to love by in the new year. Now, just think do you want better results in school this year? This is the way to get them. Lay down the law for yourself by creating your own rules in the form of these resolutions. These promises are for you and you only. Dont let yourself down and dont cheat yourself out of an improved academic performance. The new year can bring a lot of positive changes; make sure school habits are included!
